When Do You Need a Fabric Coating Machine?
A textile coating machine adds a layer of polymer - PVC, PU or acrylic - onto a woven substrate to give functions the cloth alone does not have: waterproofing, wind resistance, flame retardancy, abrasion resistance or a smooth decorative face. If your product is tarpaulin, tent fabric, truck cover, bag fabric, industrial textile or coated upholstery, a fabric coating machine is the line that applies and fixes that layer.
Coating sits between dyeing and finishing: the base cloth is usually dyed or greige, then coated, dried and cured on one continuous line. Knife-over-roll and knife-on-air are the two common application methods, and the choice depends on the substrate weight, the coating chemistry and the required coat weight.
You need a textile coating machine when you move from selling cloth to selling a coated, value-added product. Buying the right line is a decision about coating chemistry, width and drying capacity - not just the coater head itself.
Core Parameters & Technical Data
The RD Series covers a range of configurations for finishing and coating processes, rather than a single fixed specification, so each line is built against your product.
Coating heads are configured for knife-over-roll and knife-on-air application, selected by substrate and coating chemistry - PVC, PU or acrylic.
The series is suited to coated woven goods such as tarpaulin, tent fabric, bags and upholstery, and can be matched to different substrate weights.
Working width, coating width, line speed, dryer sections and exhaust configuration are chosen against your product and production plan.
The full range and detailed technical specifications are shown in the product gallery. Please contact us for detailed technical specifications and brochures for your exact coating product.
How to Choose a Fabric Coating Machine
Start with the coating chemistry. PVC, PU and acrylic demand different knife settings, drying temperatures and exhaust handling - define your coating and product first, then the line.
Choose the coating method by substrate. Knife-over-roll is common on heavier, stable woven substrates; knife-on-air suits lighter or more sensitive fabrics where direct pressure on a roll must be avoided.
Match working width to your widest fabric, with margin. A line that is too narrow cannot be widened economically after delivery.
Check drying and curing capacity. Coating fails most often in the oven, not at the knife - make sure dryer sections and exhaust match the coat weight and speed you plan to run.
Plan for the full process chain: unwinding, coating, drying/curing, cooling and rewinding should be balanced so the line runs without bottlenecks.
Choose a production factory that understands textile finishing, not a general web coater. Coated fabric has specific edge, tension and shrinkage demands.
Common Mistakes Buyers Make
Buying a paper, film or tape coater for fabric. Non-textile coaters ignore woven edge control, fabric shrinkage and unwind/rewinding tension, and produce poor coated fabric. Always specify a textile fabric coating machine.
Choosing the wrong application method. Knife-over-roll on delicate or uneven substrate, or knife-on-air where a heavy coat needs roll support, shows up as uneven coat weight and streaks.
Under-sizing the dryer. A coater that lays down the right coat but cannot dry or cure it in line speed leaves the line stalled and energy wasted.
Forgetting exhaust and solvent handling. PVC, PU and acrylic coatings release vapours during drying; without correct exhaust the finish suffers and safety is compromised.
Ignoring edge and tension control on wide fabric. Coated tarpaulin and tent fabric run wide, and without controlled tension and edge guidance the product wanders and wastes cloth.
